Indian Classical Dances
There are 8 forms of classical dances in India.

Bharatanatyam: Is considered the oldest form of dance and mother of all other styles of classical forms. This is art form is remple dance of south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Bharatanatyam is a combination of Bha Bhava-expression, Ra Raga -music ,Ta Tala -Rhythm and Natyam-Dance.
Kathak: This form originated in UP. It is one of the oldest classical dance form of india. Famous kathak dance is derived from Katha- or Story tellers, people who narrate stories during the whole art of kathak dance.
Odissi: The oldest surviving dance form of Orissa. This is also a temple dance. Music in Odissi is a blend of both carnatic and hindustani forms., The Odissi dance form is known for its style and independent movement of head,chest and pelvis.
Kathakali: It is a story dance form from Kerala. Katha means story and kali means dance or a performer.It is only performed by males. This dance is known for its exquisite make up styles.
Mohini Attam: Another dance form from Kerala. It is a popular form with drama in dance performed with subtle gestures and footwork. Only performed by females.Movements are circular and spiral. The story narrates the Mohini avatar of Vishnu.
Kuchipudi: It originates from AP and derives its name from kuchipudi village near bay of bengal. The instrument which accompanies the dancer are violin,flute and tamboora. Only in kuchipudi the dancer breaks into in spoken dialogue in-between. One can classify it as dance drama.
Manipuri: It originated from manipur. It is based on the Ras-Leela of Radha and Krishna. It is purely religious and characterized by fluid movements.
Sattriya: It originated from Assam.It is a dance-drama performance art with origins in the Krishna-centered Vaishnavism monasteries of Assam.
